How to Make Artificial Orchid Flowers

Orchid flower is widely considered to be one of the most beautiful flowers in the world. They come in more than 30,000 varieties, which includes every color and shade imaginable. As beautiful as these flowers are, they are also not easily grown outside of the tropical areas. On top of that, orchid flowers are also quite expensive to buy, so many people are a little hesitant to try their hand at growing orchids. One alternative to having live orchids is to use artificial orchids. They can be made as an arts and crafts project or for sheer entertainment. Whether for simple decoration, a flower bouquet, or just for fun, making an artificial orchid flower requires a few materials and some imagination. Clay, glass, paper mache, and even silk are all used to make great looking artificial orchids. Here are a few steps you can take to make your own.

Step 1: Cut out Petals

Start your artificial silk orchid by cutting out the shape of the petals. This should be done with white silk. The best way to do this is to simply trace the shape out of a template, or freely draw it onto the silk. Use the craft knife to cut it out carefully.

Step 2: Paint to Your Desired Color

The great thing with orchids is that there is no wrong color. With as many different varieties of orchids in the world, they cover the entire color spectrum. Use some fabric paint and delicately paint with a very thin brush. Make sure you use smooth strokes so as not to leave marks. Take some time to look at what orchids naturally look like in nature. Blend in several colors to get a more realistic look.

Step 3: Place in Heated Mold

Let the petals dry completely before setting into mold. To get the desired look, you will need to use a mold that will be heated in a mold press. Place the petals in the mold and make sure they are situated correctly. Press the mold for the desired shape. Take out and let cool.

Step 4: Place into Center

After the petals are cooled down, affix them to a centerpiece. This center can be a dedicated center or the stem itself depending on the type of orchid.

Step 5: Make Stem

The stem for your artificial orchid flower is a basic arts and crafts wire. Wrap this thin wire with special green craft paper and set the orchid flower onto the stem. You can also make leaves from the same silk, dying or painting it green. Press the leaves in a mold and wrap around the stem with small coils of wire wrapped in green paper.

Step 6: Arrange and Enjoy

Once your artificial orchids are completed, you can arrange them in a vase, as a bouquet, or to simply use as a single centerpiece. Making these great flowers offers hours of enjoyment and fun for one person or an entire family.
